Diaper rash home remedies – home to natural healing

Diaper rash is usually caused when the diaper retains the baby’s urine or feces creating a moist environment for bacteria, fungi and virus to breed. As the baby’s tender skin comes in contact with the microbes, a rash erupts.  The home remedies for the rash will detail tips on how to counter the condition and prevent its occurrence in the future.

Effective home remedies for diaper rash

  • Give the baby sitz bath in baking soda solution. Add two teaspoonfuls of baking soda to a tub of warm water and allow the baby to soak in for 10 minutes for about 3 times in a day.

  • Vinegar solution is also a good home remedy for diaper rash. Mix one part of vinegar with  8 parts of water and use wipes to clean the baby’s bottom with the solution. The alkaline nature of vinegar solution will offset the acidity of the urine and help reduce the rash.

  • Oatmeal pitches in as a skin-soothing agent. Its vitamin-E rich content helps to soothe dry and raw skin through its moisturizing effects. Add one tablespoon of dried oatmeal to the baby’s bath and allow soaking in for about 10 minutes.

  • If talcum powder was the erstwhile home remedy for diaper rash, it is not so now, as scientific evidence proves that talcum is not good for inhalation. Cornstarch steps in as a good substitute as it helps to remove dampness. Rub the cornstarch with hands and apply it on the baby’s bottom.

  • Pure Aloe Vera gel works as one of the effective home remedies for diaper rash. Apply the gel on the affected area and put the diaper on the baby only after some time. Aloe-Vera with its all-in-all skin-care properties will help to ease the irritation.

  • Applying olive oil on the baby’s bottom and leaving it on for sometime works as a good home remedy for diaper rash. Olive oil’s moisturizing properties help to heal the rash and also remove the “rawness” of the skin caused due to the rash.

  • Over and above, make sure to change the baby’s diapers regularly so that the bottom remains dry giving less room for moisture and infection.

  • Do not go for plastic diapers which cause less of sweating in the bottom region, piling up on the moisture within.

Points of caution

The home remedies may not be applicable to all infants depending upon the skin sensitivity of each baby. So seek a medical opinion before resorting to the home remedies, especially if your baby is hypersensitive.
