The holiday season is filled with good food and lively parties. However, many of us can't avoid the nagging question at the back of our minds: "Are we eating too much?"


 


Then, the next course is served and we forget about the previous calories. Well, not this holiday season! If you want to know how to cut calories this holiday season without compromising on the holiday fun, read on. Here's a list of the most unhealthy holiday dishes, and how you can make them healthier.


 


 


 


Mashed Potatoes



Starchy mashed potatoes are usually made with heavy cream and butter. You can cut down on both and use buttermilk instead. The best part is your guests won't even know the difference in taste and you'll have saved about 90 calories per serving! Or you can served baked potatoes instead, which are fewer in calories.


 


Cakes and pies


 


Don't worry, we are not going to ask you to skip dessert. But you can substitute sugar with unsweetened applesauce or pureed prunes. If you want to go a step further, try using egg whites or egg substitute in place of eggs. You can save on about 96 calories per serving!


In addition, go for pumpkin or apple pies, which have fewer calories than pecan pies.


 


Whipped cream


 


We know it would be cruel to ask you to cut down on whipped cream for a holiday meal but it is loaded with fat. You can make a lighter substitute for this cream by using evaporated milk. In this way, you will save about 60 calories on every 2 Tbsp of whipped cream.


 


Turkey


 


It would be almost sacrilegious to suggest that you skip the holiday turkey, so instead we'll suggest that you skip the skin and save about 60 calories per serving. Skip the dark meat, which is fattier than white meat. Now, isn't that like keeping your cake and eating it too?


 


Celebratory alcohol


No need to skip the toast. Just skip the eggnog and replace it with champagne or sparkling wine to save 100 calories per serving.


 


Keep Moving!


When all is said and done, there really is no substitute for exercise. So make sure you make a little time for some physical activity to help burn off those holiday calories.

What a terrible advice. What about the amounts of carbohydrates that are the real culprit. Fats are not the issue. Pity this article contains information that is so terribly outdated. Time to read up on the science people.
