Soda bones

American men are under threat from something they gulp down on a daily basis - their favorite soda drinks, which are loaded with sugar. These soft drinks not only induce obesity in the country but are now also being accused of worsening the osteoarthritis condition in men.

A study, conducted by the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Tufts Medical Center in Boston, and Brown University, has found that high-calorie soft drinks increased the narrowing of joint space in the knees of their consumers. This narrowing of the joint space is a 'measurable symptom of osteoarthritis.'

The study was conducted on more than 2,000 patients, each suffering from osteoarthritis in the knee. It was also found during the research that people who did not consume soda beverages at all showed less signs of progressing disease in their knees. In fact, men who weighed less, also showed substantial knee damage if they consumed soft drinks more frequently. The findings of this study were presented to the American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting last week in Washington, D.C.

Although, the researchers are not sure about the exact reason behind the relationship between osteoarthritis and soft drinks, they speculate that it could be because of ingredients like caffeine and phosphoric acid, with the latter also known to interfere with the process of calcium-absorption in the body. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that one in two Americans is known to eventually develop this knee disorder. That shall make you realize how real the threat from the sugary sodas is.
