FDA Approves First-Of-A-Kind Seasonal Flu Vaccine
For those who are preparing for protection from the seasonal flu, which is unavoidable during the fall season, here is hope at last. The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has recently approved the first vaccine for seasonal flu, which is made using animal cell technology and is effective against influenza in people who are 18 years and older.
The vaccine, Flucelvax (Influenza Virus Vaccine), is produced by Novartis and it is the first cell-culture manufactured vaccine. Dumping the egg-based production method, this vaccine was produced using cell technology, which uses mammalian cell line, rather than chicken eggs to grow the virus strains. The process is also faster, which is why the US health officials have been already promoting the cell method of manufacturing the vaccine because it can be instrumental in case of an epidemic.
