Obama Shares His Beer Recipe With The World
In a YouTube video on the White House Brewery, the White House Assistant Chef Sam Kass says teasingly, while taking a big gulp from a glass of beer, “America, I wish everybody could taste this but we don’t quite brew enough!” Well, Chef Kass, thank you for your concern but now America can brew the White House beer themselves. This will be possible because President Barack Obama has released the much-anticipated recipe, fulfilling his promise made last week.
Before kicking off his “Road to Charlotte” campaign tour, as the election clock ticks off, President released the secret recipe for the White House Honey Ale. This fulfills the promise he made to the public last week that the recipe “will be out very soon!” The promise was made during a chat session on social networking site Reddit. The Prez was trying to humor the public as he wrote during the session, “It (recipe) will be out soon! I can tell from first hand experience, it is tasty.” The Q ‘n A session was in response to a Reddit user’s petition seeking the recipe to be made public. Well, everyone knows what Obama’s favorite food is, but it seems when it comes to a drink, he cannot look beyond the beer.
The beer recipe petition was filed under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) right after the President proudly displayed the beer bottles filled with ale brewed at home during one of his campaign stops. The recipe is not a new one, as it has been used earlier to brew beers served to the likes of former Presidents Washington and Jefferson. While earlier the White House had said that the recipe may just go public if the petition managed to obtain 25,000 signatures. However, at the time of this announcement, the petition had got only 10,000 signatures. Despite that the White House decided to release the recipe, how sweet!
Not Just Honey Ale!
In a rather magnanimous gesture, the public will also get to copy the recipe for the White House Honey Porter. While releasing the recipes on the White House blog, Kass, also senior policy advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives, wrote, “With public excitement about White House beer fermenting such a buzz, we decided we better hop right to it.” In the YouTube video, released along with the recipes, Kass is shown saying, “Brewing beer is something Americans are doing in their homes and garages across the country, and the President certainly thought it would be a great idea to see if we could join the American people in that time-honored tradition and brew some of our own beer.”
Kass informs that the White House beer recipes are “embroideries” on an original recipe, mastered by a local Brewster. Besides, Chef Matt Slattery, who works in the White House Navy Mess as well as Chief Beekeeper Charlie Brandts provide tips on how to brew beer. Praising the brew, Kass writes on the blog, “As far as we know the White House Honey Brown Ale is the first alcohol brewed or distilled on the White House grounds. George Washington brewed beer and distilled whiskey at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson made wine but there's no evidence that any beer has been brewed in the White House.”
Okay, so for your next BBQ or picnic, you know which beer to start brewing. After all, that would mean you will share a glass with the President himself!
