Book 1When you are the First Lady of America, every word you say or write is lapped up by the public and when you have a charismatic TV personality to take that word forward, there is no stepping back. Michelle Obama’s new book, “American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America,” is set for release and Rachael Ray is bringing it on her talk show on Thursday, May 31, 2012.

1) The Episode

Ray, who is an ardent supporter of Michelle’s health campaign, “Let’s Move!” will be visiting the White House to film an episode and cook barbecue with the First Lady. All this will be done in view of the White House’s 1,500 square-foot Kitchen Garden, grown on the South Lawn. Describing the May 31st episode on her website, rachaelray.com, the TV show host promises it to be a “sneak peek at her brand new book, and we’re firing up the grill for a barbecue in one of the most famous backyards in history!” The highlight of the show, however, may be Rachael’s “exclusive” interview with the First dog ‘Bo’, the furry member of the First Family.

2) The Book

When she entered the White House as Fist Lady, Michelle Obama brought with her practical ideas, recipes, resources on gardening, all aimed to promote healthy living. When she first started digging up the South lawn to plan her first vegetable garden, it was to provide for the first family’s daily needs as well as for the formal dinners. Speaking about her kitchen garden, the First Lady once said, “My hope is that through children, they (American parents) will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities.” The book in question is also an effort to speak about the issues that have been close to her heart. In a press release, issued last year, when a preview of the book was launched, said, “The book will speak to those issues which Mrs. Obama has strongly advocated for and will also include practical ideas, recipes, resources, and tips on how to begin a garden of any size, anywhere.” The book is 256-page long hardcover edition, which would be retailed in the US market for $30. Amazon.com is currently selling this book at a pre-order price of $19.20.

3) The Media Blitzkrieg

As we first said, when it is the First Lady’s book, to be released on May 29, 2012, no media stone can be left unturned. Therefore, in the coming week, Michelle Obama will be seen on a lot of TV shows, promoting her book on gardens. Given below are some of the media engagements lined up:

  1. “Good Morning America”

  2. “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart

  3. “LIVE!” with Kelly

  4. “The View”

And, of course, there is the “Rachael Ray Show.”

After having faced a spate of production delays, which saw the launch date being pushed back this year, the “American Grown” is finally ready to be released. The best part, however, about this whole venture is that the proceeds from the book would go to the “National Parks Foundation.” Coupled with the fact that Michelle Obama did not take an advance on the book, this book is an almost philanthropic attempt. Would you care to buy it?
