Food contest 1There is never a dull moment in the Obama household. Just days after President Barack Obama was petitioned for eating too much junk food in public, the First Lady Michelle Obama has announced “The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge” to promote healthy eating among kids. This contest will see children from all over America submitting their recipes, which have to be healthy, affordable, and tasty. Want to know more? Read on:

1) The Contest

The contest is a joint initiative between “Let’s Move!”, US Department of Education, USDA, and Epicurious. The Challenge is open to kids aged between 8 and 12 years as well as their parents. Together, they can send creative and nutritious lunch recipes, made with all food groups and send them to Epicurious.com either online or through mail between May 21 and June 17, 2012. Results will be announced on July 16, 2012. The contestants will have to follow the following rules:-

a.        Refer to nutritional guidelines presented under the MyPlate.

b.        The recipes should meet the primary criterion of being healthy.

c.        The recipes should represent all food groups.

There is a panel of judges, including White House Chef Sam Kass, who will select the best recipes out of the submitted ones.

2) The Spoils

One winning recipe would be selected from each of the 50 States, in addition to D.C., Puerto Rico as well as the US territories. The winning recipes will be announced in July and the winners (one child/one parent) will be given a chance to travel to Washington, D.C., where they will be dining at a White House kids’ “State Dinner”, which is scheduled to take place in August 2012. At the dinner, the selected recipes from the contest would be served. The children and their parents are free to make any sort of dish as long as it confirms to the contest rules. The Challenge invites recipes for soups, sandwiches, stews, pasta, salads, wraps, yogurt parfaits, basically anything under the sun, which the children would like to eat for lunch, either at home or in school.

3) Michelle Obama’s Words Food contest 2

Announcing the Challenge, the First Lady said, “We all want to ensure that our kids are eating nutritious, delicious food at every meal, and as a mom I know that parents are always looking for new ideas to make that happen. With parents and kids all across the country getting creative in the kitchen, I know we'll find healthy meals that every family will enjoy.  And I can’t wait to try the kids’ creations myself.” She has been a passionate supporter of healthy eating and living ever since the Obamas shifted into White House. Her dedication to the “Let’s Move” campaign is expressed in the following words, “In the end, as First Lady, this isn’t just a policy issue for me. This is a passion. This is my mission. I am determined to work with folks across this country to change the way a generation of kids thinks about food and nutrition.”

Well, it is hoped that this contest will help the First Lady to realize her mission. In case you want to participate in the contest, you know where to apply but before that, get your recipe ready and if you would like to share it with ifood.tv too, send it to us in your comments.
