US Presidential Campaign Goes To Dogs And Dog Meat
The 2012 US presidential campaign is literally going to the dogs, thanks to the Democrats’ and Republican’s obsession with “man’s best friend.” The Romney camp has caught hold of an excerpt from US President Barack Obama’s book, “Dreams From My Father” and they are running rampant with it all over the media. There are captioned pictures, memes, YouTube videos, and whatnot, all intent on bashing President Obama as a dog-meat lover. So much so, that President Obama's favorite food is no longer wings, pies, or cheeseburger, it is dog meat!
1) Of Dog Meat And More
It all started with a GOP blogger, who mentioned an excerpt, actually just a line, from one of Obama’s books published in 1995, which refers to his childhood days in Indonesia. In the book, Obama talks about his food experiences with his stepfather Lolo Soetoro. He says, “With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chili peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy).”
2) The Media Frenzy
Once this one sentence got out on the blog, it was all downhill from there for the campaign and the US politics. The best news came from Twitter, where Twitteratis enjoyed having a run at the ‘dog eating president’ and came up with recipes with dog meat for Obama to try:
- Eggs rover easy
- Great Danishes
- Rat Terriertouille
- Chihuahua Chimichanga
- Pugs in a Blanket
- Strawberries with Whippet Cream
3) Romney’s Revenge
This dog-fight between the Democrats and the Republicans began when stories circulated of the Republican frontrunner, Mitt Romney, was found traveling to Canada on a road trip with their dog Seamus inside a kennel strapped to the car-roof. Never mind the fact that that happened in the 1980s. It didn’t help either that Mrs Romney assured the animal rights activists and the PETA that their dog “loved” those trips or enjoyed the journey on the car roof.
4) Woof Woof in the White House
Everybody in the world knows about ‘Bo’, the First Dog therefore it came as a shock to the Americans that the dog-loving President could actually also be a dog-eater. In a way, Obama’s ‘crime’ is bigger than that of Romney. And there seems to be no respite for the poor president if the Internet is anything to go by. For instance, when David Axelrod, Obama's chief campaign strategist and senior advisor, put up a picture of the President and his Portuguese Water dog traveling in a chauffeured car, on his Twitter account, he put it up with a caption, “How loving dog owners transport their dogs.” Now the same picture has become a source of ridicule as the Republicans have re-tweeted that picture with this jab, “In hindsight, a chilling photo.” The jibe forced Axelrod to take the picture post down.
Well, nobody knows for sure whether President Obama still loves to eat dog meat or not and nobody has really bothered to find that out. Nevertheless, the dog-days of the American presidential campaign are just starting, so keep reading this space for more, woof, woof!
