  • Echinacea- This is a time tested herb for allergic rhinitis and has been a popular folk remedy since ages. The leaves have natural antihistamines that work in a similar manner to drugs but without any serious side effects. Tablets and capsules can also be used after getting a doctor's approval.

 

  • Turmeric- Hot milk with a large pinch of turmeric is a good home remedy as it helps to increase immunity and reduce the allergic response. An antioxidant called curcumin is responsible for this benefit. Turmeric is safe enough to be used everyday and can also be had by pregnant and lactating women.

 

  • Goldenseal- It is rich in vitamins and minerals that reduce the symptoms of a runny nose and eyes. It makes the body more resistant to common allergens so that frequent episodes of allergic rhinitis are not experienced. Liquid extracts and the dry powder are most suitable forms for treatment and are recommended for use on a daily basis.

 

  • Ginger- This herb is very effective in reducing the built up congestion in the chest and also bouts of cough. The extracts have expectorant properties that help to thin the mucous, so that recovery is faster. The pain relieving properties also help in getting rid of a throbbing headache which is experienced by more than half of the sufferers. Ginger tea can be prepared as per your liking and is suitable for people of all ages.

 

  • Mint- The pungent oils in the mint plant mainly consist of a compound called menthol. Some medicinal used of mint are that it reduces pain, cold and is also anti inflammatory in nature. A few leaves can be chewed raw or they can be crushed and brewed into a hot and soothing beverage. Mint essential oil can also be used in place of the plant.

 

Allergic rhinitis is easy to manage when adequate rest, drugs and herbs have been used to treat this chronic condition. When and if possible, all steps should be taken to prevent contact with the allergen so that the rate of occurrence is minimized.
