herbs for schizophreniaA mental disorder that is characterized by a disability to channelize thoughts and emotions in a normal manner is called schizophrenia. The use of herbs along with the commonly prescribed anti psychosis drugs can result in well being and better mental status of the individual. The symptoms seen are hallucinations, speech disorders and social withdrawal which manifest before the age of 19 years in both men and women. The causes that have been identified are genetic factors, drug overdose and stress in the fetal stage. Diagnosis is complex as it involves the understanding of many factors and underlying conditions. The herbs that can be used to manage schizophrenia are given below.

Natural Treatment Options For Schizophrenia

  • Flax Seeds- After many research studies showed the effectiveness of omega 3 fatty acid rich  fish oil for schizophreniathe use of flax seeds for treatment was recommended. These oil seeds too have the same beneficial fatty acids that can help reduce the symptoms of psychosis that is common in schizophrenia. Tablets, capsules and edible oils that contain these extracts can be used regularly.

  • Milk Thistle- One major side effects that is seen on the use of anti psychosis drugs is liver damage that can become severe if left unchecked. The use of milk thistle herb protects the liver from damage as it is rich in antioxidants. Liquid extracts and supplements that contain this herb can be used for treatment.

  • Ashwagandha- This Ayurvedic herb has been used traditionally to cure mental disorders although its use lacks sufficient medical evidence. Also it should not be taken by pregnant women as the effects on the fetus are unknown. It is available in the form of tablets and capsules.

  • Ginkgo- This herb is beneficial as it improves blood circulation to the brain and also results in better absorption of drugs that are prescribed for management of schizophrenia. However loose stools and headaches are some of the symptoms that can occur if this herb is used without medical supervision

  • Turmeric- This humble spice has proven properties that help protect the nerves in the brain from damage by chemicals or free radicals. If used regularly, it can improve mental health in the patients. While the fresh and dry spice can be found easily, supplements can also be opted for.

Alternative herbal therapies are a ray of hope for sufferers of schizophrenia. Although more studies are needed to determine their efficacy and safety, they can surely be made part of the diet in small quantities, on a daily basis.
