BilberriesThe clouding of the eye lenses can lead to  gradual loss of vision in a condition called cataract. The use of herbs can be tried to improve eye health but only surgery can cure this condition completely. Cataract is seen as a birth defect in some children and as an age related change in many elderly after the age of 50. If cataracts are not managed promptly they can result in complete loss of vision which is irreversible. According to some studies, protecting the eyes from UV rays and the intake of a antioxidant rich diet can lower the risk of this dilapidating condition. Herbs are rich in many vitamins and minerals that are needed for optimal eye function. Some herbs that can improve the symptoms in cataracts or act as preventive supplements are described below.

Natural Treatment Options For Cataract

  • Thyme- It is rich in a nutrient called B carotene which is a powerful antioxidant and can prevent the free radical damage that occurs due to the rays of the sun. It should be a frequent part of the diet and should be used at least twice a week. This herb can be dried before use to improve shelf life.

  • Gingko – It has been used traditionally to improve blood circulation and the supply of nutrients to vital body parts. Taking it regularly can slowen the damage that occurs to the lens and delay the onset of cataract making it one of the most important supplements for eyes health.

  • Turmeric- Labs studies have shown the efficacy of regular use of this spice in lowering the risk of cataracts in diabetic rats. This result is sufficient to recommend its use in diabetic humans for preventive purposes. Fresh or dry turmeric are easily available forms and can be used on a daily basis.

  • Mint - The leaves of mint contain many antioxidant rich extracts that can prevent the occurrence of cataract in the elderly when used frequently in the diet. Mint tea is enjoyed by many and can be had once a day.

  • Bilberry- The health benefits of bilberry are many because of the antioxidant called flavonoids that they contain. A handful of these purple berries eaten three times a week are sufficient to provide many benefits and protect the eyes from degenerative changes. The fresh berries are a better option than supplements and tablets containing flavonoid extracts.

Taking preventive measures by enriching your diet with natural herbs can protect you against the formation of cataracts. Remember that the use of herbs lacks sufficient medical evidence and it is only a supportive treatment. Talk to your doctor for drug and surgical advice.
