  • Chamomile- This herb can soothe and relax the mind so that sleep is uninterrupted and peaceful. Chamomile tea during bedtime is an excellent sleep inducer and is safe to be consumed everyday. It is one of the most widely used herbal remedies for insomnia. 

 

  • Passionflower- It has many extracts that help one to sleep well and calm the nerves. Tablets and capsules can be purchased from the market or the dry herb can be used to make a herbal tea.

 

  • Valerian- It is a herb that is sold over the counter in many countries. It works similar to sleeping pills and helps to get a good night's sleep. It should be used an hour or two before bedtime as it can take up to 3 hours to work.

 

  • Spinach – These healthy greens are rich in magnesium, which if deficient in the body can lead to disturbed sleep. It also helps to relax and reduce anxiety which is important to overcome for good sleep.

 

  • Kava- This herb has been used to treat anxiety since time immemorial. At present capsules, tablets, liquid extracts and teas that contain kava are available. However talk to your doctor before you begins its use, as liver damage is one important side effect.

 

Herbal remedies are worth a try to treat sleep disorders which can otherwise impact the quality of life. Sufficient exercise and meditation should also be practiced.
