Insulin resistanceWhen the hormone insulin, responsible for reducing blood sugar levels becomes sluggish in its function, it causes a condition known as insulin resistance which can eventually lead to diabetes. Many fiber rich herbs can help to maintain optimal glucose levels and lower the risk of developing diabetes mellitus in the future. High triglyceride levels, weight gain and excess abdominal fat are some symptoms that require immediate attention. Lack of exercise and genetic predisposition are the major causes that lead to insulin resistance. A well balanced, low fat diet that is enriched with herbs can give positive results and improve insulin function. Easily available herbs that enable this to happen are described briefly below.

Natural Treatment Options For Insulin Resistance

  • Fenugreek- The bitter fenugreek seeds are rich in a substance called trigonelline, which has been proven clinically to reduce blood sugar and triglyceride levels. 2 teaspoons of the seeds , either soaked in water or powdered should be taken everyday.

  • Cinnamon-  Antioxidant rich essential oils contribute to the health benefits of cinnamon. It has the ability to lower blood sugar levels when taken in the powdered form. Half a teaspoon of this spice is sufficient to bring about this effect. Use in curries, soups and bakes.

  • Curry Leaves- These aromatic leaves are often used to flavor rice and curries. When used regularly, they can lower insulin resistance possibly due to the high amounts of fiber that they contain. They can be dried, powdered and taken with water or simply chewed whole.

  • Oregano – The medicinal properties of this herb include its ability to make insulin more sensitive and responsive to glucose in the blood. This helps to normalize sugar levels and lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Oregano oil or the herb can be used.

  • Ginseng – This herb can help as it stimulates the production of insulin by the pancreas and increases the count of insulin receptor cells. Tablets, capsules, liquid extracts and powders containing ginseng are available.

Use these above listed herbs to stay fit and keep blood sugars stable. Exercise and give up smoking to always enjoy good health.
