Herbal Remedies For Tooth Decay
Dental caries or tooth decay is an infection of bacterial origin that is responsible for pain, cavities and loss of tooth. This common condition has many effective herbal remedies that can be safely used on adults as well as children. Herbs have essential oils that are natural antibacterial agents which can kill streptococcus and lactobacillus bacteria, the two most common causative factors. Sufficient oral hygiene and a diet low in sugary foods goes a long way in preventing this from recurring. Herbs that are recommended to provide relief from pain and clear up the infection are listed below.
Clove Oil- It is rich in a substance called eugenol that possesses antibacterial and pain killing properties. Dilute this in any edible oil and gently apply on the affected tooth. Adding a drop or two of clove oil in plain water makes for a natural mouth wash which can be used twice a day.
Meswak- This is a medicinal twig that has proven anti bacterial properties and is also a natural breath freshener. The easiest way to gain its benefits is by using toothpastes that contain the extracts.
Rosemary- This fragrant herb has many plant chemicals that can inhibit the growth of streptococcus bacteria so that the intensity of infection does not increase. Chewing a tablespoon of the fresh herb every morning is a good practice.
Peppermint- The raw leaves when eaten can help freshen breath and reduce pain because of the high amounts of menthol present in it. Alternatively, boil a handful of leaves in water and use as a mouth rinse after every meal.
Ginger- The root of fresh ginger can be placed in the mouth and chewed gently to release the juices. This reduces inflammation, pain and bacterial growth making it one of the best natural remedies for toothache.
Prompt dental care is the primary step in treatment when symptoms of tooth decay are noticed. Even though herbs are useful, one must not depend entirely on them in order to prevent complications. Never delay in consulting your dentist and always be regular in maintaining oral hygiene.
