Indian GooseberryA dangerous infection caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis that commonly affects the lungs is called tuberculosis or TB in short. Herbal remedies can treat some of its symptoms like fatigue, weight loss and low appetite apart from boosting the immunity. For complete recovery and to prevent relapse, a six month antibiotic treatment has to be completed without missing a single dose. What makes prompt management even more important is the highly contagious nature of this disease that has made it a health problem in developing countries. Herbs that can be used alongside drugs for tuberculosis management are given below.

Natural Herbs For Tuberculosis

  • Indian Gooseberry- Commonly known as amla, these green berries are the richest natural sources of vitamin C. This is a powerful antioxidant and is very helpful to increase resistance. The healing of bacterial lesions in tuberculosis is one of the important amla medicinal uses. The juice of the fresh fruit diluted in water should be taken once a day.

  • Ginger- This spice is best known for its fiery sharp taste. It has an important constituent called gingerol which according to lab studies can inhibit the growth of the mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. Tea made with fresh ginger juice can be had once a day.

  • Turmeric- The curcumoids that are responsible for the yellow coloring of turmeric, may prevent the multiplication of the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. Use half a teaspoon of this yellow spice daily.

  • Garlic- A very encouraging study done by the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), showed that allicin the main antioxidant in garlic, can stop the TB bacteria from replicating inside the body. Capsules that contain this extract can be used for treatment.

  • Green Tea- The polyphenolic compounds that are present in green tea can combat the deadly mycobacterium by inhibiting its multiplication in the body cells. To obtain herbal tea health benefits, it should be consumed fresh, twice a day.

As can be seen, herbal remedies for tuberculosis are many and hopefully new research will give us more such herbs. A well balanced diet plays an important role in the treatment of this disease.
