Fenugreek seedsIf your triglyceride blood test has revealed a value of greater than 150 mg/ dl, trying herbal remedies is an easy way to bring it under control. High intake of calories in the form of excess carbohydrates like starchy food and alcohol is the main cause. These excess calories are stored as triglycerides in the body and increase the risk of heart diseases, stroke and atherosclerosis ( fatty deposition in the artery walls). Many herbs have good fats and soluble fibers that safely bring down the levels in the blood. Herbs that are beneficial for decreasing triglycerides and can be incorporated in regular cooking are described below.

Natural Remedies For High Triglycerides

  • Fenugreek Seeds- These bitter seeds contain a chemical called trigonelline and plenty of soluble fiber that can reduce levels of triglycerides on regular use. Soak 10 g of the seeds in water overnight or powder them and mix in water.  Consume this twice a day.

  • Cinnamon- This fragrant spice does more than just provide a lovely flavor to food. Studies have shown that using only half a teaspoon of powdered cinnamon results in 30 % reduction of triglyceride levels. Buy good quality sticks and powder at home to use with milk and water or sprinkle on food.

  • Turmeric- Adding this spice to meals means a healthier heart as turmeric lowers the level of triglyceride in the blood. This was seen in a study conducted recently. Even small amounts of turmeric are helpful making it one of the best supplements for triglycerides

  • Green Tea- This soothing drink can lower levels of bad fats such as triglycerides when used regularly. A polyphenol in green tea called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), has powerful lipid lowering properties. Having a pinch or two of black pepper along with green tea increases the absorption of EGCG.

  • Mustard- Spicy mustard sauce just got healthier! Mustard seeds have essential oils that can reduce the levels of bad cholesterol ( LDL cholesterol) and triglycerides. This spice is also available in the whole and powdered form.

There are many herbs to choose from when it comes to reducing the high levels of  triglyceride. Moderate exercise and a low fat diet should also be followed for best results.

I don't like green tea, isn't black tea enough to keep my triglyceride levels down?

The EGCG content of black tea is nil when compared to green tea. The tannins in black tea also lower TG levels but not as much as green tea. Try flavored green tea or add some lemon to regular green tea.
