Green tea A disorder that is characterized by a range of symptoms like memory loss, learning disability, depression and anxiety is called dementia. This is irreversible and has no cure but a herb rich diet can help in protecting nerves from further damage apart from improving general well being and health. Much more scientific research is needed to find potent herbal cures for dementia which is very common in the elderly. In this blog we will explore some herbs that are safe and may benefit those who are suffering from this condition.

Herbs For Healthy Brain Cells

  • Turmeric- Indian curries keep the brain healthy and the key could be the spice turmeric that is used everyday to provide a rich color and flavor to food. While much more research is needed to support this claim, a pinch or two of this spice everyday can be recommended for good health.

  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids- A study found that DHA, a form of omega 3 fatty acids, when supplemented in the diet regularly can improve memory and cognitive function, which generally decline in the elderly. Talk to a doctor about the right dose of supplements to be taken.

  • Fennel Seeds- Chewing these seeds is not only a good way to freshen your breath, it is also rich in antioxidants and anti inflammatory agents that can protect your brain cells. The crushed seeds can also be brewed into a tea.

  • Gingko Biloba- This can improve the blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain when taken regularly. However, it can interact with other drugs and hence must be used only after getting your doctor's approval.

  • Green Tea- Green tea could help ward off dementia because it is rich in polyphenols that are present abundantly in its leaves. Its use in dementia is encouraged because it can reduce damage of nerves and associated loss of memory. More studies are needed to strengthen this claim.

It has been established that there is no cure as yet for dementia, but herbs are a ray of hope and their use in small amounts should be encouraged. An important scientific breakthrough for herbs that can cure dementia is being awaited eagerly.

Some studies have shown lower rates of dementia in Asian countries. We need more data to determine the exact cause.

If turmeric is good for brain cells, I should think any brightly colored spices or vegetables may do the same! Yes it would be interesting to know if Asian people escape dementia at a marked degree?
