Though there is a scheduled and compulsory vaccination for this infection, medicinal herbs can also help to control it.  A whooping sound when one breathes in, is characteristic of this disease. Severe and uncontrolled cough, fever and diarrhea are also seen.   • Honey : Honey for coughs is an age old remedy which is very popular till date. Many cough syrups and lozenges that contain honey can be obtained from the market. A good remedy that can be tried at home is to mix two teaspoons of honey to hot or warm water and use everyday. For infants, use only pasteurized and graded honey.


 


  • Ginger : A simple remedy is to mix 1 teaspoon ginger juice to half cup water. Peel and wash ginger thoroughly before doing so. This spice has expectorant properties that decongest the airways in the lungs and make breathing easier.


 


  • Betel Leaves : They have proven anti microbial properties that are helpful to reduce the severity of the bacterial infection. The leaves are crushed and boiled in water till a strong broth is prepared. Drinking this everyday is very useful.


 


  • Holy Basil : A recent study has highlighted the importance of holy basil in the treatment of whooping cough. The essential oils have important compounds like camphene and eugenol that reduce congestion and provide relief.


 


  • Turmeric : It is a time tested antibacterial spice that is safe for use in infants and children. Boil a pinch of turmeric in one cup of milk and drink at least twice a day. To increase the absorption of turmeric, a small amount of black pepper can also be added.


 


  • Lemongrass : It is a natural remedy for whooping cough. Make a paste of the leaves and add to curries or brew into a broth.

I thought whooping cough has been eradicated. Do kids still get infected?

Unfortunately it has not been eradicated. Some studies have claimed that the mutation of the virus makes vaccines also ineffective.
