  • Salmonella can be present in the milk that was used for cheese making especially if it was unpasteurised. The effects are seen after 12 hours of eating and the symptoms can last up to one week. Most commonly, fever and vomiting are seen. Diarrhea can also be associated with abdominal cramps.


  • Soft cream cheese is a high risk food for contamination with E coli bacteria. This is because raw milk is used to make this cheese. Upon infection, diarrhea with blood and chills can be seen. In severe but rare cases, there have also been instances of damage to the kidney and the need for dialysis. Untreated it may lead to death.


  • Contamination by Listeria bacteria is a huge concern especially for pregnant women and children. It is most commonly present in raw milk and its products. It can cause fever and vomiting which can last weeks together. Confusion and weakness is also common. It can gravely effect the fetus and damage organs like the brain if the infection is not controlled.

 


Tips To Identify Rotten Cheese

  • Make sure to buy only cheese made from pasteurised milk.


  • There should be no cracks on the cheese rind.


  • The cheese should not have an unnatural bulge.


  • Store cheese in the crisper in an airtight container.
