thot4food's picture

ApricotApricot allergy is akin to other fruit allergies and becomes obvious if you experience mild to severe reactions on eating the fruit. You need to be extremely careful before adding condiments and processed fruit items to your meals. Read the label of packaged fruit dishes carefully for any reference to apricots. You also do need to learn about the do’s and don’ts associated with the condition. Read on for details.

Reasons for Developing Apricot Allergy

Prunus Armeniaca is a specific protein that has been identified as an allergen in apricots. It can cause your body to consider it as harmful which results in a host of allergic symptoms. The secretion of histamine as well as the production of an antibody known as IgE is responsible for the symptoms and you also need to test yourself for allergies to peaches, cherries, and apples if you develop an allergy to apricots.

The North Europeans are usually not as affected as the people of the Mediterranean region with the apricot allergy being substantially milder in them. They are similar to the allergic symptoms observed in birch allergies.

Apricot Allergy Symptoms

  • Abdominal cramps along with vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Contact dermatitis can occur on touching the fruit or any of the related products.
  • Swelling around the mouth, lips and inside the oral cavity along with tingling.
  • Breathing trouble can lead to shortness of breath and wheezing.
  • Severe reactions may mimic cyanide poisoning occasionally.
  • Life threatening conditions are known as anaphylaxis and can result in a sudden decrease of blood pressure and loss of consciousness.

Treating Apricot Allergy Symptoms

  • Avoiding all forms of apricot whether whole, dried or in cans is considered to be essential to prevent recurrence.  Fruit based deserts, juices, and sherbets should be shunned completely and it is best to steer clear of peaches, apples, and cherries until your allergist gives you the go ahead signal.
  • Antihistamine formulations can relieve the mid symptoms effectively but the severe symptoms require stronger medication and epinephrine injections.

Educate the child care giver in your house and at school if your child happens to be the one with apricot allergy. It is also advisable to be cautious while travelling as apricots are used extensively in the Middle East and Mediterranean countries.
