Squash allergy refers to allergic reactions that occur on consumption of both the summer as well as the winter variety of squashes. However, food experts have observed that the allergies are more common in the winter group of squashes. Reasons for Squash Allergy
Our body reacts violently to the proteins that are found in squashes as it fails to recognize them. They are thought to be harmful and the body creates specific antibodies called IgE to counteract them. The squashes are also rich in citric acid which may also be responsible for triggering off the allergic symptoms.
Squash Allergy Symptoms
The symptoms associated with this condition are usually mild. They include:
Intense itching of the skin along with formation of skin hives and eczema patches with inflammation.
Tingling around the mouth and lips with inflammation and flushing of face.
Indigestion, vomiting, and stomach cramps.
Severe reactions known as anaphylaxis are extremely rare but may occur where the tolerance for the vegetable is low. This is characterized by wheezing, dizziness, and loss of consciousness and may be life threatening if ignored.
Treating Squash Allergy Symptoms
Avoidance of all types of squashes along with desserts, frozen foods, and condiments containing the allergen.
Anti histamines can help to alleviate the tingling and inflammation.
Topical skin lotions relieve the skin disorders.
Epinephrine injections are required to reduce the anaphylaxis symptoms.
Get yourself tested by an allergist if you suspect squash allergy as refraining from the nutritious vegetable without confirmation will not be very wise.
