SpinachThe incidence of spinach allergy is not too high in the United States. However, you do need to learn about the facts associated with the condition in order to take precautions should you ever be afflicted with it. Learn all about the risks and symptoms of the allergy in this blog.

Reasons for Spinach Allergy

The high amount of salicylates present in this leafy, green vegetable can be held responsible for triggering off the allergic reactions. The body produces a chemical known as histamine in response to the salicylates which it does not recognize. A specific antibody called immunoglobulin E is also created to combat the protein. Food scientists have also identified kDa, another protein present in the spinach as an allergen too.

Spinach Allergy Symptoms

The Cleveland Clinic has made a detailed study of the allergy and reported the following as common symptoms of the condition.

  • Abdominal cramps

  • Skin rashes

  • Nasal congestion

  • Inflammation of bodily tissues.

  • Flushing of the face

  • Shortness of breath and wheezing.

  • Sudden reduction of blood pressure and unconsciousness.

Treating Spinach Allergy Symptoms

  • Avoiding spinach in all forms including products containing spinach extracts.

  • Antihistamines bought over the counter can successfully eliminate the side effects.

  • Medication for asthma reduces the respiratory distress.

  • Topical skin lotions can provide relief from skin itching and eliminate the rashes.

  • Severe reactions may require administering epinephrine by injection.

Food allergists have found that cooking spinach does not destroy the allergens and continuing to consume the leafy vegetable by ignoring mild allergic symptoms may result in gout. It will,  therefore, be wise to refrain from this vegetable if you happen to be suffering from spinach allergy.
