The medical experts have identified 23 proteins within the rye which can trigger off an adverse reaction. Your  body will simply refuse to recognize the proteins and secrete histamine which causes the painful and irritating symptoms to occur whereas the antibody IgE specifically created for this purpose will try to eliminate the rye proteins from the system.

Bakers and animal farm workers often experience this type of allergy as have to work with rye products extensively. Wheat and barley allergy may also occur if you are allergic to rye.


Rye Allergy Symptoms

  • Skin rashes may occur all over the body or remain confined to the facial region.
  • Itching of the lips, mouth and oral cavity may occur.
  • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea usually occur causing dehydration.
  • Respiratory problems amounting to shortness of breath and wheezing are common symptoms
  • Headaches are usually mild but can also become a full blown migraine in rare cases.


Rye Allergy Diagnosis

  • Skin prick test- A small amount of the allergen is injected under the skin and observed for allergic reactions.
  • Blood Tests- A sample from the patient’s blood  is examined for the presence of IgE.
  • Food Challenges- Food products containing rye are given to the patient for a specified time and reactions noted.


Treating Rye Allergy Symptoms

  • Avoiding rye in all forms especially bread, gravies laced with rye seeds and confectionaries containing the grain. Vodka and whiskey are best avoided as they are brewed from grains.
  • Over the counter anti histamine drugs help to lessen the mild irritations,.
  • Hydrocortisone formulations eliminate skin rashes.
  • Medication given to asthma patients can help to get rid of respiratory problems.
  • Epinephrine injections are usually administered if the condition becomes severe.


There is no need to feel bogged down if you have been diagnosed with rye allergy. You have to avoid the Pumpernickel bread for sure but just think of all those exotic food products that you can have instead!
