Palm Oil Allergy
Palm oil allergy is very rare, however few symptoms are often found in hypersensitive people. Palm oil is derived from the pulp of the palm fruit and is semi-solid in nature. It is commonly used in cooking especially in tropical Africa and Southeast Asia. Being a vegetable oil, it is very low in cholesterol while it contains some saturated and unsaturated fats.
Rare Occurrence Of Allergy
If we look for palm oil allergies we would find that they are infrequent because palm oil often used is a very refined form. During the process of refining, most of the allergy causing proteins gets removed and thus it becomes safer to be consumed. In few cases, some traces of allergen proteins are left behind that cause some allergic reactions on the consumption of palm oil.
Common Palm Oil Allergic Reactions
Very few people exhibit the signs of allergic reactions due to the ingestion of palm oil. Furthermore, the reactions may vary among different individuals. In some individuals, allergic reactions may appear just on skin in the form of hives, rashes and reddening of skin. Apart from effect on skin, palm oil can also cause tingling sensation in the mouth, lips and tongue. One may experience burning sensation after consuming the oil. Some allergic reactions also appear in the form of gastrointestinal disorders. If the intake of oil was in higher quantity and the person is sensitive to palm oil, it may cause nausea, vomiting and even diarrhea.
Severe Symptoms Of Palm Oil Allergies
The abovementioned symptoms were not worrisome as they could be easily taken care of by avoiding palm oil intake. However, some hypersensitive individuals exhibit some serious and life threatening allergic reactions after consuming palm oil. They would experience dizziness and breathlessness. In some individuals blood pressure drops dangerously and person gets unconscious within few minutes of palm oil ingestion. These fatal reactions are termed anaphylaxis which though rare in occurrence but are very serious in nature. In such cases, person should immediately administer epinephrine so as to prevent any further problems.
How To Cure Palm Oil Allergy
Allergic reactions should never be overlooked as it may further worsen and turn into some other complications. So, if you ever notice signs of allergy after consuming palm oil, make sure you visit an allergist for proper medication. He would monitor the situation and prescribe you the medicines so that the allergy subsides soon. Some antihistamines and topical corticosteroids are also very effective in treating the allergies.
