Culinary Uses Of Hydrochloride AcidMany people ask me what are the uses of hydrochloric acid in food. Actually, to be very precise, hydrochloric acids can be used in industry as a chemical reagent, as a substance to bring out a chemical reaction and as an additive in food. Hydrochloric acid is  nothing but a solution of hydrogen chloride (HCI) in water. It is very corrosive and hard mineral acid which is produced from vitriol (sulfuric acid) and common salt. It is mainly used in many industrial processes such as pickling of steel or production of organic compounds. But do you know we can use hydrochloric acids in food as well? Here we are going to discuss few important uses of hydrochloric acids in food.

A large variety of foods can be processed with hydrochloric acid additives. The corn syrup, like high-fructose corn syrup, can be produced with hyrdrochloric acid. This high fructose corn syrup can be used in the production of soft drinks. Hydrochloric acid can also be used to make artificial sweetners such as apartame.

Hydrochloric acid is very beneficial for the older people who suffer from low acid deficiency in their digestive system. You will get different forms of diluted hydrochloric acid in the form of pill or powder. These pill and powders are the alternative forms of hydrochloric acid which can be dissolved in water or may be mixed with food.

Hydrochloric acid helps in the breakdown of food in the stomach. There are many foods which naturally contains hydrochloric acid such as kale, olives, lemons and spinach. When you consume these hydrochloric acid enriched foods, they help to stimulate the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Many problems might occur such as heartburn or stomach irritation when you have the deficiency of hydrochloric acid in the body.

Thus we have seen hydrochloric acid is very versatile and we can use in our daily foods too. But be careful while using hydrochloric acids because excessive usuage of it might cause problems like dermatitis, gastritis or dental errosion.
