I know after reading the title most of you might be eager to know about those five powerful antioxidants which will give you the boost of life.  There are myriad benefits of antioxidant foods. First of all antioxidants save you from the harmful effects of oxidation. Normally the antioxidant foods are doused with polyphenols which curb the harmful consequences inflicted by oxidation.


 


I am going to tell you about some interesting antioxidants and benefits of antioxidant foods. I am sure that most of us tend to have these foods almost on regular basis, but rarely think about its purported health benefits:


 


Chocolate: When talking about the benefits of antioxidant foods, I thought of starting with something sweet. I believe that "a child in man never grows up"; similarly his craze for chocolate too remains the same throughout the lifetime.  Many of us munch our chocolates without realizing that they are amongst those powerful antioxidant foods which are stuffed with flavonoids. These flavonoids fight against degenerative diseases.  You can have controlled dose of chocolates everyday if you wish to reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer and asthma. For extra benefits always go for dark chocolates because they have more cocoa than the white ones. The chocolate derives its antioxidant properties from raw cocoa.


 


Coffee:  I have mentioned before that the benefits of antioxidant foods are innumerable and coffee is one of the powerful antioxidants known to man.  I am damn sure that after reading this article you will never say "no" to a cup of coffee offered to you. The coffee is rich in caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid. These flavonoids act as mood enhancers and they equip your body to fight against some harmful forms of cancer like colon cancer and rectal cancer. These flavonoids also promote health of blood vessels, thereby reducing the instances of stroke. Coffee is especially recommended for women due to their nutritive benefits. Studies are being conducted to establish the link between coffee and its role in preventing Parkinson’s disease and diabetes.


 


White Tea: I thought of including white tea in my article about the benefits of antioxidant foods, because in my opinion white tea is athe most powerful amongst all antioxidant foods. White tea is rich in antioxidant called Flavorous, which inhibit growth of cancer cells and prevent the development of new ones. In some cases, white tea has been found to work as well as the prescription drugs, but without the side - effects. Catechin is the type of antioxidant found in white tea which has demonstrated capability to curb cholesterol levels and prevent the instances of arteriosclerosis (hardening of arteries).


 


Various studies depict that white tea promotes cardiovascular health by improving the artery function and lowering the blood pressure. They promote the health of blood vessels thereby curbing the ravages of a stroke. White tea also aids in bone health and it has demonstrated strong antibacterial and antiviral properties too. Due to its minimal processing white tea has more nutritive value than the other forms of tea.


 


Blueberries: Blueberries are powerful antioxidant foods which are rich in nutrients. The blueberries are powerhouse of polyphenol antioxidants.  It is believed that the native Americans used blueberries for their healing properties. Other than the regular health benefits of antioxidant foods, scientists concluded that blueberries had something more to offer. They found than lowering the instances of blood sugar,  urinary infections, cholesterol and depression; blueberries helped in curbing the effects of destructive Alzheimer’s disease upto some extent and also it helps in blocking replication of hepatitis C virus .


 


Black Rice: I thought this article on benefits of antioxidant foods will be incomplete without the mention of black rice. Many of you will be surprised to know that black rice packs in more antioxidants than the blueberries. The black rice is powerhouse of antioxidants called anthocyanins, which have demonstrated strong abilities to promote the brain health. These anthocyanins also play instrumental role in preventing instances of cancer and heart disease. Black rice is normally known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
