A human rights official expressed concern over safety of Chinese food safety activists this Thursday. The official is associated with the United Nations and seemed to have grave concern over safety of the Chinese activists who are residing in the country.

Olivier De Schuttter, the human rights expert on the right to food gave voice to the concern over safety in China at a press conference. The media soon reported the story aptly titled ‘UN shows concern over safety of Chinese food safety activists’  which went on to delve deep into the societal pressures as well as the governmental intimidation prompting widespread concern over safety of Chinese food safety activists.

De Schuttter cited the instance of Zhao Lianhai who had turned a food activist after detecting melamine tainted formula food which made his son sick. He was sentenced to two and a half years of prison time as he galvanized other parents to protest against the melamine scandal. This is undoubtedly a cause for concern over safety of Chinese food safety activists stressed De Schuttter.

Most of the other parents had been similarly impacted by unsafe food too. Creating ‘social disorder’ was the charge leveled against Zhao Lianhai which is a grave matter of concern over safety of Chinese food safety activists. De Schuttter also stressed that his concern over safety stemmed from a fear that the condition prevailing in China would hamper further activities in future.

He went on to add that things like the freedom of speech and freedom of association all went on to highlight the social and economic rights enjoyed by free men and any kind of crushing down on the basic rights like right to food would continue to remain a matter of concern over safety of Chinese food safety activists.

Minxin Pei, an expert on Chinese affairs believes that such actions would discourage people from bringing food safety problems to the forefront. This in itself is again a cause for concern over safety of Chinese food safety activists. Pei further reiterated saying that the concern over safety of the food activists would subject the people to more contaminated food in the long run.

China has tried to clean up its image following a spate of food scandals recently but imprisoning activists will only result in worldwide concern over safety of Chinese food safety activists ultimately.

The local newspapers have reported incidences of restaurants cooking with ‘gutter oil’ which is recycled and laden with carcinogenics. The concern over safety of Chinese food safety activists also acknowledges the need for fair and impartial hearing regarding the serious health issues like lead in candies and string beans full of pesticides. The melamine tainted dairy products have resurfaced yet again doubling the concern over safety of Chinese food safety activists all across the Western countries. The contamination had affected 300,000 people in 2008 killing 6 infants in all.
