GlycineAn important amino acid manufactured by the body and one of the many building blocks of protein molecules is glycine. It is present as part of many dietary supplements and drugs and can have dangerous effects on the body if taken in excess amounts. This occurs due to the lack of awareness concerning the right usage of protein supplements. In fact, many healthy individuals get sufficient glycine if they consume protein rich foods like meat, dairy and legumes in moderate amounts. A balanced diet chart will provide the right amount of this amino acid, eliminating the need for supplements. However, side effects of glycine do occasionally occur and the impact that they have on the body is described below.

Negative Effects Of Glycine Overdose

  • Gastric Distress- When there has been an overdose, the complains of vomiting, diarrhea and nausea are common. Many individuals have experienced this after taking the supplement without reading the labels. Stop using glycine if such symptoms surface.

  • Interaction With Clozapine ( Drug For Schizophrenia)- This drug is used in the treatment of schizophrenia which is a severe brain disorder. Glycine interacts with clozapine and reduces the absorption of this drug. This is best avoided as it interferes with the successful management of the condition.

  • Allergic reaction- Proteins make up for the most number of allergens and glycine amino acid is no exception. It can cause redness and itchy skin as well as swelling of the face, throat and tongue in certain individuals. Reading labels on supplement bottles is the best way of preventing such allergic reactions.

  • Liver Complications – A healthy liver plays an important role in determining how proteins are manufactured, broken down and used by the body. When the liver function is reduced, the use of glycine supplement can add on unnecessary stress and strain on this vital organ.

  • Poor Kidney Function- Excess of glycine can adversely affect normal kidney function or worsen conditions in the already malfunctioning body part. Kidney patients should always use glycine supplements with care and talk to their doctor when in doubt.

Glycine amino acid is safe when obtained from dietary sources but the same cannot be said for the synthetically manufactured supplement . Do not use such powders and capsules unless medically prescribed and rely on a healthy and wholesome diet for meeting your glycine needs instead.
