Fiber Rich Diet May Help Prevent Cancer

Research is constantly providing facts that support the idea that a fiber rich diet may prevent breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, colon cancer, heart disease and other serious ailments.                    

Plant-based diets, or fiber-rich diets, consisting of fruits, non-starchy vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and nuts and seeds, is associated with lowering the risk of a number of the most common cancers, which are the growing causes of death across the world and among all age groups. In women, fiber rich diets have been found to help prevent breast cancer, ovarian and uterine cancer.


Recent studies have found that fiber helps to speed-up the passage of food through the body, which may prevent harmful substances, found in some foods, from affecting the colon.


Experts stress the fact that there can not be a single food, nutrient, or compound that can provide the best cancer protection, however a mixture of different foods can be effective. 


A vegan diet, rich in antioxidants, fiber, phytochemicals and other healthful plant compounds, is the best way to prevent cancer. It is, however, important to exercise regularly, avoid smoking, and maintain a healthy body weight.


Additionally, fiber rich diets can reduce hormone production, thus helping to prevent breast cancer and prostrate cancer, which are hormone-based cancers.


Here are a few tips to incorporate more fiber into your diet for cancer prevention:

  • Eat a 90% plant-based diet.

  • Fill 2/3 of your plate with foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts, and one-third with lean or low-fat animal products.

  • Limit red meat to 18 ounces per week.

  • Avoid processed meats.


Fiber rich diets are low in calories, which can greatly help with weight control. Many cancer experts point out that maintaining your body mass index (BMI) within the healthy range may be very beneficial in preventing the risk of all cancers, as excess body fat is a contributor for a number of cancers especially breast cancer in women.
