The film, which was based on the story of real life boxer Micky Ward, was as authentic as it could be. To begin with, the actor requested Micky Ward to move into his house and went through four years of intense work out to get the desired look.

As part of his intense work out and training, the actor woke up every morning at 6 am and would hit the gym. Night outs and parties were a thing of the past. This routine he religiously followed from May 2008, until the film was finally canned. Such was his dedication that this 39-year-old actor looked like a true boxer when he was done with his training.
To further up the look of his characters, Wahlberg got professional help during his boxing preparations. Stars like Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao, came forward to help Wahlberg achieve his goals. "I wanted to look like a Manny Pacquiao-caliber fighter and not like another actor who's doing an okay job," explained Wahlberg.
During the shoot, Micky Ward was present on the sets, every single day to hep Wahlberg perfect the character. "I didn't want to look like an actor who could box a bit, I wanted to look like a boxer who could win the world welterweight title," Wahlberg said. When Wahlberg was doing his shoot, he refused to use a body double even for the toughest of scenes. This also led to him taking some punches straight on the face.
Wahlberg was also in the habit of getting to the studio three hours in advance, so that he could spend that time training, before the camera started rolling. This is called real dedication!
