Omega 3 Fatty Acids Can Prevent Dental Problems
The kind of diet we have and the food we consume reflects on our health and general sense of well being. It is essential to have a well balanced diet with the right quantity of vitamins, minerals, proteins and fibers. There are hundreds of healthy choices out there and one needs to pick and choose what is good for them. Omega 3 Fatty acids is one such protein rich ingredient that can prevent dental problems and several other diseases.
What are Omega 3 fatty acids? They are essential fatty acids also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that the body cannot make on its own but has to be got from our food and nutrition. These PUFAs are known to help reduce symptoms of inflammation, heart diseases, cancer and arthritis. Omega 3 fatty acids are commonly found in fish such as mackerel, herring, trout, salmon and albacore tuna.
Benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids:
-People who consume the required dose of this are said to have decreased HDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
-Also said to lower blood pressure and hypertension.
-Can treat atherosclerosis by reducing plaque and clots in the arteries.
-By reducing HDL and triglycerides patients with diabetes are benefited too.
-Symptoms of Lupus (SLE) are seen to reduce.
-Some studies indicate that calcium levels are increased thus helping patients with osteoporosis.
-Some studies indicate that depression, ADHD, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder symptoms are reduced but it is not conclusive.
Omega 3 fatty acids can prevent dental problems: Periodontitis is a severe dental problem with inflammation, teeth and bone loss. Researchers at the University of Kentucky have shown in animal studies that omega-3 fatty acids prevent gum disease by slowing the growth of bacteria. Increased omega-3 in humans especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) tends to reduce occurrence of periodontitis. Several other studies conducted have also shown the benefits of EPA and DHA significantly reducing periodontal diseases.
Since dental diseases are expensive and painful to treat it might be a good solution to speak to your doctor and include those beneficial omega-3 fatty acids in your diet which are cheap and easily available over the counter too.
