What is a Macrobiotic Diet?

It is mostly vegetarian in approach and is primarily based on plant-based diet, with a sharp focus on whole grains, vegetables, beans, soups, fruits, etc. Macrobiotic diet is a very organized form of diet, where every individual component is quantified. For example, a typical macrobiotic diet should consist of 60 percent of whole grains, 25 percent of organic fruits and vegetables, 5 percent of sea vegetables and 10 percent of soup.

Foods not Allowed in a Macrobiotic diet:

The main focus is on vegetarian diet. As such, food items like dairy product, fish, meat, unrefined sugars, etc are not allowed. Even certain vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes, spinach, beets, zucchini, avocado, eggplant, peppers, asparagus, etc are kept out of the realms of a macrobiotic diet. Seasonal fruits are also restricted while on a macrobiotic diet.

Positives of a Macrobiotic diet:

Since the core of a macrobiotic diet is based on vegetables and fruits, it naturally ensures a low fat, low carb and high fiber diet for you. This not only improves your overall spiritual and physical wellness, but also safeguards you against a number of health concerns like obesity, heart problems, diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure and even cancer.

The Deficiencies:

But, there are the “not-so-positive” aspects that we need to keep in mind as well. Macrobiotic diet is low on certain vitamins (like Vitamin D and B12) and certain essential minerals like iron, protein and calcium. These nutrients are very important for our bodies. For example, iron helps in the formation of blood cells. Similarly, vitamin D helps in the formation and strengthening of our bones. Getting these essential nutrients in sufficient quantities from just the natural sources is quite challenging.

Need for a Well-balanced Diet:

Macrobiotic diet can definitely be healthy if you are conscious of the kinds of food you are consuming and try to get a well-balanced meal for yourself. The nutrients that are not sourced from the natural sources of your diet can be easily supplemented by taking a multivitamin supplement. Thus, if you are open to take vitamin and mineral supplements and ensure that your meal is complete with all the essential vitamins and minerals that our body need, then there is no better diet than a macrobiotic diet.
