Nutritional Significance Of Vegetable Consumption During Pregnancy:


  • Vegetables are very rich sources of antioxidants that are highly helpful during pregnancy in fighting against immunity related problems and act as free radical scavengers as well.

  • Being very much popular as 'negative calorie foods', vegetables contribute a lot of nutrients to our diet with a minimum contribution of calories. This quality of vegetables enables expecting moms to fight against weight gain during pregnancy.

  • The carbohydrates of vegetables are complex and fiber-rich in nature which provides the energy to the moms-to-be and also helps in preventing from constipation during pregnancy.

  • Vegetables contain no cholesterol, have little or no fat, and are low in calories.

  • Colored vegetables are good sources of phytochemicals which are precursors of vitamin A .These phytochemicals are capable of fighting against health-related issues like diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure.

  • Leafy vegetables (eg.Spinach) are good sources of fiber, folate, and supply varying amounts of iron and calcium which aid in proper development of fetus in the womb.  

  • Flowers, buds, and stalks (eg. celery, cauliflower etc.) tend to be rich in vitamin C, calcium, and potassium.  

  • Seeds and pods (eg.beans, peas, corn etc.) are a good source of complex carbohydrates and contain varying amounts of B vitamins, zinc, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron.  

  • Roots, bulbs, and tubers are also good sources of nutrients.  Potatoes are a good source of vitamin C and potassium.  Sweet potatoes and carrots are great sources of beta carotene. Radishes and turnips are good sources of fiber and vitamin C.  

  • Fruit vegetables (eg. eggplants, squash, tomatoes etc.) are good sources of vitamin C.  

 


Complications Of Vegetable Consumption In Pregnancy:


  • Vegetables are of course greatest sources of nutrients. But from the safety point of view, utmost care should be taken when they are eaten during pregnancy.

  • It is essential to make sure they vegetables are washed to avoid potential exposure to toxoplasmosis.

  • Toxoplasmosis may contaminate the soil where the vegetables were grown and such vegetables may cause health hazards during pregnancy.

 

So moms-to-be! Wanna choose a nutrient dense, versatile and tasty food when pregnant? Choose vegetables. But ensure that they are washed properly and free of contamination, to be on the safer side.
