It is an important carbohydrate and is present in many of our foods. Let us learn whether it can be deemed as safe when ingested during pregnancy.

IMPORTANCE OF GLUCOSE IN OUR DIET

It is to be noted that our body cells cannot survive without glucose. It it the most important fuel for our body and is needed every minute for important bodily functions. Our brain cells are the largest consumer of this simple sugar and cannot work without it.

SOURCE:

It is found both in natural foods as well as added to certain food stuffs.

NATURAL SOURCES

  • Fruits and vegetables

  • Milk and yogurt

  • Carbohydrates like rice, bread and pasta

INTAKE OF NATURAL GLUCOSE  DURING PREGNANCY

With the above established facts , it is clear that no one can do without glucose. It gives us energy for basic survival.

Especially in pregnancy , energy requirements are very high to meet the special needs of the growing and demanding foetus. If the mother does not have sufficient blood glucose levels, it will lead to fatigue and poor growth of the foetus.Hence it is important that the mother has all natural sources of glucose like fruits, vegetables, dairy products and whole grain cereals which will also give her vitamins, minerals and protein in addition to carbohydrates.

ADDED GLUCOSE

  • Desserts

  • Ice cream

  • candies

  • sweetened energy drinks

  • commercial chocolates.

INTAKE OF ADDED GLUCOSE DURING PREGNANCY

This as mentioned above is commonly present in processed food. The intake of such foods should be kept to a minimum as they are refined and have a poor nutritional value.

This is especially true for women who suffer from diabetes during pregnancy.Too much glucose can lead to high blood sugar levels. They should choose natural foods with plenty of fibre in the form of whole grains, fruits and vegetables with skin.

RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH GLUCOSE INTAKE IN PREGNANCY

The main problems that are associated with excess glucose consumption is weight gain which is dangerous because,

  • According to many studies, excess weight gain increases the risk of the infant suffering from childhood obesity and heart diseases later in its life.

  • Increased chances of a cesarean delivery

  • In some mothers it may increase blood pressure levels

  • Backaches and leg pain increases due to weight gain

  • If weight gain continues it can lead to gestational diabetes .This is common in the first trimester. It should be noted that it is the weigh gain from the excess glucose, not the glucose itself which can increase risk of diabetes.

Go ahead and indulge your sweet tooth, but choose nutrient rich foods that are devoid of added sugars. This will give you a healthy and blissful pregnancy.Do not forget to make exercise a part of your daily routine!
